The emphasis at the centre is on simulating the most realistic bouldering experience possible in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The specially formulated friction paint supplied by Bleaustone, Sheffield is textured to make the climbing surface more realistic.  This texture offers a fantastic smearing effect adding to the realism of the experience.

We believe a cruci
al part of indoor bouldering is regular route changes.  As well as regular changes, we believe in quality and interesting route setting by some of the best route setters out there.

Durham Climbing Centre changes their routes every 8 - 10 weeks and employs some of the worlds best climbers and route setters to set the routes in our centre.
To date, all of the routes have been reset by world class route setters; Ian Vickers, Jamie Cassidy and Jason Pickles as well as being added to by our in-house setter Kevin Milburn.  DCC also uses guest route setters occasionally to add even more variation.

The range of interesting problems balance stength, endurance and technique and aim to make the climber think about exactly what they are doing.

Grading System

Durham Climbing Centre uses a colour coded system similar to that used at Fontainebleau, France an extremely popular place for bouldering.

All routes are colour coded to indicate easy, medium, and hard routes.  Climbers are encouraged to try every problem in their ability group.  As your climbing improves, you will find that you can climb harder and try the more challenging circuits we have to offer.
The idea of the circuits is to start at one side of the wall and work around all of the problems in your ability group. For example, all of the yellows etc.

Completing circuits in this way is a really good method of getting a sustained full body workout.

Colour Coded Ability Chart

Problems are grouped into colours according to difficulty levels.
Along with this system all problems are individually graded V1 - V9.
