| | Course Outline | | The newly developed Climbing Wall Award is a national award which allows the bearer to teach and supervise groups and individuals at any artificial structure in the British Isles. The CWA is primarily concerned with ensuring good practice, leading to the safe enjoyment of climbing activities and to an understanding of the sport. It covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing excluding the teaching of leading. An additional module is available for those candidates who wish to supervise abseiling and top roping for those walls and structures which have top access. | | Who should apply? | | To be involved in the CWA scheme you need to be a climber and have an interest in the supervision of novices in the activity. A minimum of six months personal climbing experience is required and ideally this should include some climbing outdoors. Before attending a training course you must have climbed on articficial walls on at least fifteen occasions, visited at least three different walls and successfully led on climbs on walls. You must be at least seventeen years of age at the date of registration. Please note you must be registered with both the BMC and the CWA scheme before attending the training course. Single Pitch Award - To book call 0191 3789555
| | This award is for those who wish to supervise a group on single pitch crags and climbing walls. The training and assessment covers such skills as choice of venue, rope management, correct use of equipment, group management, emergency procedures, crag etiquette, access and conversation. SPA training and assessment courses last a minimum of two days or twenty hours. You will learn how to become an effective supervisor, encouraging others to enjoy their climbing safely, whilst also improving your own climbing techniques. | | Between training and assessment candidates are expected to gain expertise supervisory and personal climbing experience. Every opportunity should be taken to practise the skills learned during training. | | Who should apply? | | To be involved in the SPA scheme you need to be a climber and have an interest in the supervision of novices in the activity. A minimum of twelve months personal climbing experience is required. | | Before you register make sure you can answer yes to the following questions: | - Are you at least 18 years old?
- Do you have 12 months rock climbing experience?
- Are you an active climber with experience of lead climbing?
- Have you led at least 15 routes outdoors on leader placed protection?
| | The SPA is the only nationally recognised award that enables holders to supervise novices and others on single pitch crags and climbing walls.
