Bouldering

The great thing about bouldering...

The great thing about bouldering is that it is open to all ages and abilities- bouldering can be as easy or as difficult as you like. For those who have never climbed before, bouldering is a great way to get started- all you need are climbing shoes, chalk and comfy clothing. This means no expensive equipment, no ropes, no hassle! All of the equipment you need can be bought or hired at the centre. For those who want to learn new skills and improve their form, why not try one of our improver courses? So for those of you who still don't know... what exactly does bouldering involve?

What is bouldering?

Bouldering is a form of climbing which differs from traditional styles of climbing as it is done close to the ground and without the use of ropes and harnesses. This means the danger aspect of bouldering is low. Within the industry, bouldering is fast becoming the most popular form of climbing. Bouldering is the most natural form of climbing emphasising power, strength and dynamics. These attributes are used in individual moves or short sequences of moves which differ from the traditional styles using ropes and harnesses. So basically, imagine children climbing trees or rocks- that's bouldering! The only difference is that Durham Climbing Centre has purpose built walls with climbing holds set up in different routes and for different abilities. So you can climb all year round whatever the weather!

Traditional methods of climbing such as top roping, using ropes and harnesses, require more endurance as the routes are longer. This means the difficulty of individual moves is not as great.
A fundamental aspect of bouldering is that it is done relatively close to the ground, the maximum height at Durham Climbing Centre is 4.5 meters. This means bouldering involves more sideways traversing than top rope or lead climbing, which makes the problems in bouldering more intricate. It is these individual moves and short sequences which make bouldering exciting- combining moves and sequences which take a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master.

Essentially, bouldering is an endless adventure of problem solving. Routes, or 'problems' as they are known in the industry are graded on their level of difficulty. The climber can try more difficult graded routes as their skills progress. The routes are changed reguarlarly to keep the sport fresh and ensure there is no end to the problem solving!

There are loads of reasons to try bouldering- here are just a few!

It's a great way to keep fit! Bouldering builds strength and improves muscle tone all over the body. As it is a natural movement using the whole body, more muscles are used together which tones the whole body.

Bouldering is one of the best all-round training methods since it can produce improvement in all three areas of the performance triad
(physical, technical, mental).

Studies have found that children develop better skills as adults from their experience with youthful disadvantages such as height and strength.

Good news for the girls! Women have a lower centre of balance and better flexibility then men, giving them the potential to progress very quickly.

Indoor climbing is the fastest growing sport in the UK. Bouldering is now becoming the most popular form of climbing and the preferred method as it is hassle free and exciting.

Come and see for yourself! You can boulder alone, with friends or family. Just come down to the wall, hire the equipment and off you go!
