This weekend, juniors from Durham Climbing Centre attended Round 1 Youth Climbing Series 2014 representing North East & Lakes region. Lakeland Climbing Centre in Kendal offers a great venue for the event having dedicated areas for bouldering and routes as well as plenty of space for spectators and well-stocked café!
In category Boys E, Twins Alexander and Nicholas Royle who climb regularly at DCC with Dad Richard both topped all their routes and boulders on the day. Despite having the same maximum score for completing their 3 routes and 3 boulders, Alexander (2nd) was just pipped to the post by Nicholas (1st) after completing one of his climbs on the second attempt. Nicholas managed to complete all of his routes and boulders on the flash! (1st attempt!) DCC Rock Star Peter McGrother came 4th, just 1 point behind 3rd place Alex Gilmore in a very close category. Peter flashed 3 boulders and 2 routes just faltering on the last move of his 3rd route. An excellent result for all in this category.
In his last year in category D, Joseph McGrother has been training hard on both routes and boulders which showed in his impressive clean sweep of flashes on all 3 boulders and 3 routes. A well deserved, solid 1st place result.
Tom Dumble entered category Boys C and for the first year, new rules from BMC meant that this category would now lead their climbs. Tom has been practicing his routes at other local walls and boulders in Tuesday’s DCC Academy and sometimes on Thursday evenings. Fellow climber Sam Bullock just beat Tom flashing all of his routes and boulders. Tom and Sam climb at a similar level with Tom ahead by 18 points overall in the Junior Winter Series with 2 rounds to go. Sam finished 1st with Tom taking 3rd though it was extremely close in this difficult and popular category. Well done lads.
Many young climbers from all over the region attend this event each year, with regional rounds taking place all over the UK. Climbing to a height in front of large crowds can be daunting to us adults but these kids take it all in their stride. Best of luck to everyone attending the next two rounds. Let’s take North East and Lakes to the final this year and really make an impression – you can do it!
The next round takes place on – 1st March at Newcastle Climbing Centre. All DCC Rock Stars are welcome to attend on this day, simply register online here. Staff at DCC can provide information on BMC Area Co-ordinator so parents can keep up to date with the YCS event, training sessions and information. DCC have been working hard over the last 3 years to promote the North East and Lakes region team and would welcome more competitors taking part. Find out more here or speak to centre manager Hayley McKenna on your next visit.
Round 3 takes place on 29th March at Sunderland Wall. Best 2/3 scores count towards entry into the final on 28th June at EICA Ratho Edinburgh. Click here for 2013 Durham Climbing Centre Round Up
