Beginner Taster Session

For novice climbers

For anyone new to the sport, and compulsory for novice climbers. Whether you want to get serious about climbing or are looking for a fun day out, a beginner taster session at Durham Climbing Centre is the perfect way to get started. The taster session includes 60 minutes coaching where you will learn the importance of warming up alongside basic skills and techniques in climbing. Climb on afterwards for as long as you wish!​ The session includes shoe hire and chalk hire. Booking essential.

Personal Coaching (1 Hour)

One-on-one tuition

If you are looking for private tuition book one or more personal coaching sessions with a qualified and experienced climbing coach. Designed to suit your needs, whether you are a complete beginner or looking to improve your technique, our coaches can help you release your potential.

Sessions may be booked as and when required. All sessions include consultation beforehand. Please indicate level of experience at time of booking. This session does not include equipment hire. Booking essential.

Adult Improver

Free coaching on weeknights!

On weeknights, Climbing Coaches are on hand to offer free advice on getting started, skills and techniques, route reading, training or anything else you wish to discuss. The session is very informal; the coach will aim to introduce themselves to everyone, so if you do wish to speak to them make sure you come along! Normal entry fees apply - coaching is free with your climb. No booking required.

National Indoor Boulder Award Scheme (NIBAS)

Wednesday's 7pm - 8pm


Offering five levels of structured progression, NIBAS is the ideal session if you are looking for coaching on every visit. The scheme focusses on introducing new climbers to the skills associated with climbing on artificial climbing walls without the use of ropes and harnesses. NIBAS is open to adults and children aged 7+, therefore is a unique course that is suitable for adults and children to complete together. Each candidate receives a NIBAS Log Book and certificate at each level of the scheme.To develop climbing movement skills and improve levels of ability. Booking essential.

Aims of NIBAS

  • To learn how to use equipment properly.
  • To develop risk assessment and risk management skills in the sport.
  • To work as a team, communicate with and trust other boulderers.
  • To provide a structure for development, motivation and improved performance.
  • To develop an understanding of the sport, it’s history and ethics.
  • To provide a record of personal achievement.
  • To point the way to further disciplines and challenges in climbing beyond the scheme.

Session Etiquette

  • If stated 'booking essential' please ensure you are booked into each session you intend on participating in as numbers may be limited.
  • Please contact the centre if you are booked into a session and cannot attend.
  • Please inform your instructor of any medical conditions prior to the start of the session.
  • Ensure you arrive at least ten minutes prior to the commencement of the session to fit climbing shoes and fill in registration forms.
  • Please wear light comfortable clothing for the class preferably long sleeves and trousers.
  • Please hire climbing shoes or bring your own. Only climbing shoes are permitted onto the matted areas. Bare feet are not permitted on the climbing walls.
  • Food and drinks are not permitted on the climbing mats.
  • Lockers may be hired from reception. Deposit required £1.
  • Changing Rooms are located in the Junior Climbing Area.
  • Please note the centre is monitored by CCTV.
